How can we understand TIME? If a minute and an hour, a day and a month are only the forms and conventional representations of time, is it possible to find other meanings out of these representations?
Imagining the forms of time with his paintbrush, Sim Chan’s work is both experimental and allegorical. In this exhibition, 12-month calendars will be displayed in the changing light setting.
The calendar is the major subject of Sim’s work. With the back-lit canvas, each of his paintings is a record of time through the layers of paint. On one hand, the calendars are the artist’s palette in testing the transmittance of different shades of the oil paint; on the other hand, they are a display of time that he had spent on the work.
The box, representing a “calendar day”, might require more than two nights to be filled up, depending on the drying rate of particular color or paint. Meanwhile, Sim had worked on different months simultaneously. As a result, the last box of the month, once filled, also marked the finish of the entire year.
Like understanding time with the aid of a calendar, Sim’s practice reveals a system. Yet, the former is an ideology, while the latter is a choice.
“The Discovery of Time” is not only a process of study of the materials, it is also a self-revelation of the artist from within an ideological system.
About Sim Chan
Born in Hong Kong in 1987, graduated from the Hong Kong Art School, major in Painting.
Depicting the local cityscape and the urban architecture, Sim Chan’s work expresses his observation and tactile sense of his city. Apart from this depiction, his irregular hand-crafted frame of the sky, his kite and his back-lit canvas paintings, all shows his desire to work beyond the usual format of painting as a medium. The experiments and study of different painting materials have become his recent subject of interest. No matter if it is about the limited sky or the paint and canvas, Sim’s work is a contemplation about himself and the context, documents his exploration between imagination and reality, perception and form.
